This is set around the Half Blood Prince. Draco and reader are both 17.

Draco had been your best friend for 16 years. 16 years of weird yet joyful memories and now he decided to ignore you. Of course you knew why. He had this whole 'I have to keep (y/n) safe and I can't let anything happen because Voldemort.' You understood, you really did but enough was enough. You were probably going to die in the next year anyways and you'd much rather spend it with your friends.
You found him standing in front of the Room of Requirement. Wow, his hair was messy. Were those dark circles under his eyes? 'Shut up brain and focus. We'll interrogate him later' you thought. Taking a deep breath, you walked towards him and you saw him catch sight of you. Worry crossed his face for a second and it was quickly replaced by anger.
"Why are you here? I thought I told you I didn't want to see you again!" He yelled. "Don't you understand? I. Do. Not. Want. To. See. You. Stay away from me. My dad went to prison. My mom is descending into madness with worry of me. Stay away or something bad might happen to you too!"
"Are you done?" You calmly asked.
"No! I…. you wouldn't understand (y/n)." He stated as his anger deflated, being replaced by one of sorrow.
"Try me."
He looks up, "Voldemort has a task for me and I'm not sure if I can do it."
"Mhm." You nodded, obviously not believing a word of what he said, "You can't do it or you don't want to do it?"
"I don't have a choice (y/n)! I have to do it. Don't you see! It's the only way to keep my mom and you safe."
"Listen Draco. Look at me." You commanded. "You don't have to protect your mother and me. We can easily take care of ourselves. You need to decide on what you want to do. Don't think of any responsibilities just think about what you want to do. Do what you think is right" You advised him and he stared at the ground as you left, leaving him in the silence. After all, he did like thinking alone.
