Albus Dumbledore sat behind his desk, as authoritative and imposing as ever but this time Remus refused to back down. "No Albus. We have done everything that you`ve asked of us. We`re living in that little slice of hell, keeping our relationship a secret for the first time
in our lives, even deferring to you about Harry. But that I will not grant you."
"Remus," Dumbledore's tone is reasonable, even, "with the potion the wolf is not dangerous on it`s own and it`s a risk to Sirius for the two of you to continue your moonlit romps."
"Yes, I forgot that you`re the world`s foremost expert on the wolf," Remus snaps sarcastically, the nearness of the full moon effecting his self-control.
"No, that title belongs to Sirius," Dumbledore says hoping to calm the situation.
"Would you like to see what the wolf did to prove how `not dangerous' it is three months ago when Padfoot was late for our moonlit romp?" Remus asks, his voice dripping with righteous anger as he undoes the top two clasps of his robes. He pulls the fabric aside to bare the left side of his chest and his left shoulder. A scar about three centimeters wide runs from his third rib to the top of his shoulder.
Dumbledore gasps, knowing the severity it takes for an injury to scar Remus, "I was under the impression that the wolfsbane potion suppressed the mind of the wolf."
"Not his mind. Just his bloodlust. The wolf is both a part and a whole, as am I. We are both parts of the same creature but we also have our own identities as well. He has instincts and feelings all his own. And under the effects of the wolfsbane it is only his raging desire for human blood that is quieted. As you know twenty years ago Sirius and I took our public vows to each other. Four years before that we had made our private ones. And in those vows Sirius pledged the part of his heart and soul that is Padfoot to the wolf. As surely as Sirius is my lover Padfoot is the wolf's mate. Any absence of his mate when he knows I spend my nights in Sirius` arms he sees as a betrayal, mine or Sirius', it doesn't matter which. He takes out his fury on himself. On me," Remus reclasps his robes and sits back in the chair. "Neither Sirius nor I will leave the wolf to loneliness again. Even if he weren`t dangerous he`s suffered enough. So in this Albus I am putting my foot down."
Dumbledore gives a small nod, "In this I will defer to your judgment Remus, but it is still a risk."
"So is life Albus, but you wouldn`t stop living," Remus says softly as he takes his leave.
"You assume much," Dumbledore says as the door closes.

A/N: I was reading More Than Christmas Eve when this came to me. It was the bit about Padfoot being the most important thing Sirius had ever done in his life and his devastation at the thought that the potion made it useless. And well if you've gotten this far you can see what my brain did with that.
