"There are moments which mark your life. Moments when you realize nothing will ever be the same and time is divided into two parts, before this, and after this."
-John Hobbes, Fallen (1998)
It was August 2nd, a sunny Tuesday morning. The August heat was heavy in the air, the nearby lakes populated with overheated children splashing around and playing mock games of Marco Polo. It was a calm, lazy day and everyone felt it.
Everyone but Blaine Anderson, that is, who felt the furthest from calm and lazy as humanly possible.
He stood on the high bridge, staring at the flowing water beneath, "I don't think I can do it, man. That's so far."
The golden tanned man beside him chuckled, flashing a toothy grin to the assistant behind him. "Don't worry, bro. Everyone says the same thing. It'll be great once you're down there, you'll see. Such a rush, bro! And you say the word, we throw the static line down and up you come! Nothing to worry about, bro!"
Blaine glanced at him apprehensively, losing more and more faith in the jumpmaster virtually holding his life in his hands every time the word "bro" was uttered. He examined his body harness, ensured for the umpteenth time that everything was secure, then nodded.
"Let's do this."
Two and a half hours later and Blaine's knees were still shaking, but he couldn't get the smile off his face.
He had never felt so alive in his entire life, and that was exactly the point.
He was grinning from ear to ear as he slid into the booth at the diner, the first one he'd seen once he was down from the bridge. He gave a gracious nod to the beautiful blonde who showed him to his seat and offered him a menu.
Before he could satiate his hunger from his falling adrenaline rush, he carefully unfolded the rectangular sheet of paper that had been safely tucked inside his pocket. He glanced at the list, ten numbered bullet points down the page.
Still grinning, he traced the black ink pen across number 3 on the list: Go bungee jumping.
3 down, Blaine thought. 7 to go. His high momentarily faltered at the terrifying thought that he might not have quite enough time to complete the ambitious list he had in his hands.
But before he could continue to dwell on those negative thoughts, he was interrupted by a welcoming voice, the waiter.
"Hi there. My name's Kurt, and I'll be serving you this afternoon. Can I get you started with any drinks?"
Blaine lifted his eyes to be met with the most beautiful man he'd ever seen.
