Unfortunately, I do not own anything related to Divergent.
Dedicated to my amazing friend, ehrmahgehrddahvehrgehrnt.
"Beatrice Prior." Marcus says.
I step forward, he passes me the knife. My eyes flit towards the three bowls. The flames to my left, the stones in front of me, and the water to my right.
The whole world seems to slow down, waiting for me to make my decision. Hand trembling, I bring the knife down. I thrust my hand forward.
My blood splashes into now glossy red water.
I am selfish. I am a coward.
I step back, pass the knife onto the next person and walk towards Caleb. I can't bear to look up, knowing that everyone is staring at me. But I force myself to anyways. A part of me dies when I see that my dad can't make eye contact with me. My mom just gives a sad smile and nods. Caleb's hand rests on my shoulder, and I smile at the thought that I won't be completely alone.
After the last name is called, everyone files out. Caleb is adapting with ease, shaking hands and talking to other initiates. My stomach twists. If he can do it, so can I. Taking one last fleeting look at my parents, I follow the Erudite initiates.
I hesitantly join the crowd in the elevator. It feels like an act of betrayal, but I continue.
I step in, shoving away my past, and going to a new future.
AN: I know it's short, the next chapter will be longer.
