Prompt from Castlefanficprompts on Tumblr: - 'He liked her with long hair so she cut it short.'
It felt lighter than before, completely contradicting the weight that was crushing her every minute of every day. During the showers she had forced herself to keep brief, not allowing herself the luxury of a bath, her hair had served as another reminder of what was missing. Lathering it up felt strange, as though there should be something more. There should. He had been gone for almost two months now and during that time she had cut it twice, each time a little shorter. The long locks that he had loved so much, to feel and burry his nose into, had been a symbol of a gentler time. It had grown longer, the softer she had become; the dyed, short hair of her early years as a detective reflected the walls she had stubbornly held onto. Until he came. Now he was gone and she couldn't be the same person any more. Her faith in him had slowly began to erode with every false lead, every accusation made against him and in some obscure way it almost felt as though she was punishing him. He liked her hair long, so she had cut it short. It was little, but it was something. A tiny act of defiance, a show of her anger that he, if he was as free as people believed, would see. Nothing would ever take away the love she held for him, but the trust he had built up in her heart was starting to crumble.
He was back, red faced, heavy hearted, but back. Sitting on the bed next to him she couldn't help let the tears fall. She knew that the flood would eventually overpower the dam she had built, but at the moment she didn't care as the first few drops leaked through. He gently pushed her away from his chest, cupping her cheek with his hand. Overwhelmed by his scent, lost in his eyes, all she could do was allow the tears to run. In the same motion he smoothed them away with his thumb and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Letting it drift downwards he reached the tips quickly.
"It's shorter." Staring at him she could see the wheels turning in his mind and a tinge of what felt like anger stirring in her gut.
"It is." Eyes, turning defiant she watched as his lost a little of the hope that had gathered in them as she had talked about her rituals.
"I don't know why I did the things I did Kate, and I don't know how I can ever make it up to you, but what I do know is that I will do everything in my power to regain your trust in me. I love you Kate and nothing will ever change that."
He knew her, inside and out, more about her then she was aware of herself and in a moment of complete certainty she knew that he will be able to break down her defences, just like before.
Head tilting downwards she looked at the straight line of her hair so much higher up then it had been before. Looking back into his hesitant eyes she fingered the tips.
"It'll grow."
