Within moments, he slipped from her grasp. Society tore them apart. A short one-shot. Completed.
"Oh, I am very weary, Though tears no longer flow; My eyes are tired of weeping, My heart is sick of woe."
-Anne Bronte
"I hate you," she hissed through the tears. "I believed in you, but you turned your back on me. What have you got to say for that?"
His facial features remained expressionless in the dim light on his porch; his silence making her even more irate.
He had not returned her calls, texts, or visits. All of a sudden, her best friend had become a stranger in a matter of weeks. She had hit a breaking point tonight, and and had driven in the middle of the night to his home.
Her mouth dropped open with the force of her fears becoming reality: he was done with her, their friendship, everything.
She gripped the porch railing as his voice pounded against her ears; every word sending knives to her heart.
"You never were good enough for me, Rin. Our kinds should not mix. We are on different paths; of which should have never crossed in the first place."
Her eyes widened. "Why..."
Golden orbs, with a ancient fatigue, bore into her own innocent pools. "I have expectations...and goals I must fulfill, Rin. You are preventing me from doing that. You are in the way," he reemphasized firmly. "Stop chasing after me and live your life."
With the little scraps of dignity she had left, she turned her back on him.
"I see now," she murmured as she struggled to form words. "Everything was a lie. You lead me to believe that what we had was true...but every word that came out of your mouth was a lie. I'm done chasing you, Sesshomaru. You will learn someday...good bye."
She stumbled over to her car; and struggled with in a scrambled haste to open her door.
The feeling of suffocation spread in her chest as she fought tears. "Why...did you do this to me? I should have known...I'm so stupid! Why...did I open myself up to him? Why..."
Questions that remained unanswered.
She ripped her door open and sped off in her car; wishing to get out of the area as fast as possible.
The drive home was treacherous; she avoided cars the best she could. The pain was unbearable. She collapsed upon the floor in her hallway; and remained there for hours in a fetal position as her world crashed around her.
What she didn't see, was how broken the demon was.
The shrill of the phone broke his trance.
"Did you break it off?"
His knuckles turned white as he clenched the receiver.
He hated to be bound to the expectations.
"I have done as you asked...mother." he hissed.
"Good. Things will turn out for the best. The empire will be yours in no time. You are making the right choice to stick with those who are o your stature. Think of all the profits you will make."
Three months later...
He was married to another demoness.
Her face was gaunt; her body worn and broken
He ran a million dollar company.
She worked a decent paying job to support herself.
He achieved great fame.
She wasted away.
He "forgot" her.
She didn't.
With dry eyes, she had watched from the sidelines as he achieved what he thought he had always wanted: achieving ultimate conquest of his competitors in the world of business, money, and power...but at a price.
He had none to trust or turn to for comfort that did not involve wanting some sort of retribution for their time.
He was a broken man.
He received the notification that she was gone. Permanently from his grasp.
She had eternal rest.
He watched as his empire fell to pieces.
