Apology
Barnaby had noticed the tiny crosses in the picture frame and wondered about it all this time. He felt hot under the collar for no reason at all. At the same time he felt closer, and far away from a good spirit surrounding him. It was undeniable, old, relentless, but relentless in Love. Chastising and yet forgiving. Old, yet as new and full of life as he was, and more.
"Why did you bring me here?" questioned Barnaby carefully, squeezing into the tiny chapel.
"I came here to apologize, but I thought it would be good for you to come, too."
"What could you have to apologize for in here, Kotetsu?"
"For telling people it was the alcohol that got me through after Tomoe's death." answered Kotetsu quietly. His eyes were locked on the wooden cross at the front of the room.
Barnaby was silent, trying to take in all that he meant.
Barnaby's palms were sweaty. He didn't know what to feel. All he knew was, a person like Kotetsu was enough to make him believe in the forgiveness his partner had brought him here to witness. The fact that he had asked him, showed so much trust that he felt the warm glow of their friendship all over again. It melted away all his fears. It was at that moment, he felt at home.
"I might have guessed, but, it only took us coming here to know"
"Really? I need to work on my communication."
"It's okay, I mean this kind of stuff is meant to be private, right?"
"Or shared with someone who matters to you."
"Kotetsu everyone matters to you."
Kotetsu smiled at the compliment. "Maybe I haven't been completely slacking." He turned back to his prayer with a sigh. "This was due a long time ago." He closed his eyes, sitting down with his elbows on his knees, cap off. "Just so you know, if I start to cry, then, it's in a good kind of pain."
Barnaby didn't say anything. He put his arm around Kotetsu's shoulder and his head bowed and his eyes closed as well.
"Part of being a hero" sard Barnaby "is giving credit where credit is due."
