Author's note: Inspired by one tiny little moment in The God Complex. What I like to believe might have passed through the Doctor's mind, not because I want him to be sad, but because he loved Rose, and I just really need these moments, so...

He was so weary. Oh, he hid it well. This body was so young, coursing with an almost spastic energy. Ironic, that the older he got, the younger he appeared. Just another lie. His mind, his hearts, felt every second of the endless span of his existence.

Amy... now she was magnificent. Full of life and daring and sass. Just what he needed. And curious, of course. They always were, the ones he chose to travel with him. She'd been frightened and confused and had wanted to confide in him, to understand him. "You must believe in some god, or someone..." Something flashed in his eyes and was gone, deflecting as always. He gave her no answer.

But he felt it.

"If I believe in one thing, just one thing, I believe in her." The words echoed through his mind, uttered with such confidence, such passion, such faith.

She haunted his dreams. Dreams full of beauty etched with pain.

Dreams where he still held her hand.

They ran, looking more at each other than ahead, laughter trailing behind them.

He held her as she cried, and she did the same.

Big brown eyes locked with his, full of promises and secrets. A brilliant smile lighting her face, the one kept just for him.

He pulled her into his arms, her warmth flowing through him. Reminding him of when she'd burned - sacrificed everything to save him.

She kissed him, and they danced, clinging to each other to keep from falling apart. Belonging nowhere - only to each other.

They still ran, but now they were chasing, squeals of delight drifting back to them on the breeze. Small and slightly plump and grinning, brown hair flying. Sparkling brown eyes shining above freckled cheeks and an achingly familiar smile.

Two hands to hold now, but only one heart, one life.

She gave him forever.

Him, yet not him.

He let the moment go, brushing past the pain. Same old life. Last of the Time Lords.

He'd given her what he wanted but could never have. Split apart. So much love, and she would know, because she had him. But he would never have her again.

Yet she was out there, living a fantastic life, loving him.

He would always believe in her.
