"Replacement"

Evey stood with roses in her hand and tears running down her face. She touched the antique Wurlitzer and smiled as a hand closed over hers.

"It's time Babe" said the man in a rich deep voice.

Evey looked up and stared into her husband's blues eyes, and laid a hand on his broad chest. "Go on, I'll be there in a moment." He was tall, and his receding brown hair made his forehead look unnaturally high, but she loved his face, especially his smile.

"Don't be long, okay?" He smiled and kissed her cheek lightly, before turning to collect the child running to and fro across the room. Going to the door, he turned and looked at his wife again, giving her a smile before leaving the room.

For a moment, Evey did not move. She was alone and in her mind, V was there. Laying the roses down, she punched an all too familiar tune and began dancing with the shadows of the past.

"I knew," she said quietly to Shadow Gallery. "I knew the moment I saw him striding towards me across the lecture hall, his hand out to thank me for coming to speak. The shoulders are the same and he is not as tall, but his voice. You sound the same."

She began moving her feet slowly, swaying with the music, holding her imaginary partner. "At night, I close my eyes and pretend it's you. Don't get me wrong I love him, how could I not? Through him I know who you were, and how you became to be the man I still love. But how I wish…how I want…"

She shook her head as tears began to flow rapidly down her face, smearing her make-up. Stopping her dance, she leaned heavily against the Wurlitzer. "The man I bed should be you. Your grandson should be your son! Oh V, how could I ever tell him I married him because he reminded me of you? I love your son; don't think I don't, but I so wish he was you. I lie in his arms and pretend he is you."

Picking up the roses, she wiped her eyes, and moved to the door, closing it behind her. "Goodbye my love," she spoke quietly as she mounted the stairs and emerged in bright sunlight.

"Babe? Are you okay?" asked David kindly, his eyes narrowing in concern.

Evey smiled, blinking up at the silhouette of the figure before her, framed in the bright sunlight, breathing in the sound of his voice, "As long as you are with me, my love…as long as you are with me."
