NO COMFORT FOR THE KING

Aragorn, now the king of Gondor, stood alone, on the highest tower in the White City. He let the chill night breeze cut through him, as if too, was laced with sorrow and regret.

He thought back on the events, the numerous happenings of the last eighteen months or so. All the wars, the fighting, the deaths, together with those small and rare triumphs and successes that made this whole living nightmare at least somewhat bearable.

The deaths, the losses.

All the Men; Gondorians, Rohirrim, peasants, the Elves, Hobbits, Ents, every race had been effected in some way by the Second War for the One Ring.

The Elves.

Haldir.

The name brought a sharp jolt of pain lancing through his heart and his senses, and the memories, the images, that accompanied these feelings, were nigh unbearable.

A fair amount of time had passed since the regal Elf's death at Helm's Deep, but no amount of time could heal Aragorn's shattered heart. He felt plagued by guilt, because he knew what Arwen had sacrificed to be with him, all that she had given up, but he knew he could never give her back the same kind of love that she held for him.

He couldn't tell her that, either, or she would surely die of a broken heart. Elves could do that, and Aragorn couldn't imagine a more painful way to die. It was something he would not wish upon even his worst enemy.

So he was forced to live a double lie, and he could receive no comfort at night from anyone when nightmares of a blonde elf died in front of his eyes every night.

Short, I know. But I think it speaks for itself. What did you think?
