Haunting Past

Chapter 1: Filling in the Blank

...I won't last long in this world full of wrong...

The sun was shining and birds were singing – the perfect day. It was calm and peaceful. In the distance cheerful voices echoed.

Another day without a purpose had started for me. I woke up and rubbing my eyes, I walked in the bathroom to do my morning routine. I made myself some coffee, yawning. I jumped on the sofa, careful not to spill the liquid. Sighing, I took a sip from the cup.
I am your average kunoichi. I had just recently passed my ANBU exams and the Hokage hadn't assigned me any missions. Of course, that made me bored.

I was still in my pajamas when a fellow ANBU appeared. He startled me a bit.

"Sorry." He apologized.
"Nah, don't worry! So what does the granny want now?"

"You know you shouldn't call her that. It's for your own good... Anyway, the Hokage has requested your presence in her office. She seems to have a mission for you. You'll learn the details from he personally." And with that he disappeared with a 'poof'.

To say I was happy would be an understatement.

'It was about time.'

Even my powers would have rusted with time. I put my clothes on and took off.

I knocked on the door, but no answer came. I entered quietly. A pile of paperwork had covered the desk and nothing could be seen through. When I walked closer, a figure came into view. The hands were spread around and in one of them, which was hanging from the desk, was a bottle of sake. Saliva was dipping from the woman's mouth down her chin. I stifled a laugh by pressing a hand onto my mouth.

"Um... Tsunade-sama?" I snickered.

She clumsily woke up spilling the sake and knocked down all her documents.

"You called me?

She cleared her throat.

"There is no time for jokes." She said seriously. "You're going to be assigned a new mission or to be more precise you're going to become a sensei to one of the now graduating genin teams. You will have a chance to see their profiles but you won't have a say in the matter of who your team will consist of. Although you don't have much experience in working with people, I believe you won't meet any insuperable obstacles. The genin might teach you a thing or two about teamwork too." With these words the Godaime handed me the papers.

"If you have any questions feel free to ask."

I just nodded thoughtfully and without lifting my eyes from the pieces of paper I bowed and disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

'Hmm... This is the first time since long ago that I'll be in a team again. What was the Godaime thinking?! And moreover, when did she begin to trust me enough to entrust these genins' lives to me? I don't understand.' I thought as I was walking along the street whilst biting my thumb.

"So when was I supposed to meet up with those brats?" I thought out loud.

As an answer a note fell from in-between the documents. It was written quite carelessly.

On by the way, you'll be meeting today at noon.

Don't miss it or else you'll leave a bad impression!

"That darn Tsunade! And she said no jokes, too!!!"

All the people around me stared at me as if I was some kind of ghost.

'Heh, if she were to ever find out 'bout it I wouldn't be far from it.'

The meeting would take place in training ground three. I had just enough time to grab some things from home before it.

When I arrived no one was around so I had time to look through the children's information.

'Seems like this will be interesting. They're all so different, but they do have potential for passing and becoming great ninjas. Although, one of the profiles seems to be missing...'

AN: I had written this story quite some time ago, but I hadn't decided which the main couple will be and although I'm still thinking over it, for now I'll leave it like this.

I'm open to new ideas so please:
