"I can't love him Coulson. He's the bad guy. He betrayed all of us and I can't ever forgive him for that." Skye almost yelled at Coulson. She'd been having too many conflicting arguments with herself and she was tired of it. So she went to the person she trusted the most.
"Can't or wont?" He replied in a soothing voice.
"Are you telling me to forgive him? I thought you for sure would be against him ever coming back" She was so confused. Coulson should be yelling at her. Telling her to get over these stupid feelings and stop acting like a teenage girl. Telling her she was being pathetic.
"He's good for you Skye. As much as I hate to admit it and as much as I don't like him. He's proved himself to us on countless occasions over the past 3 years and he calms you Skye. Something no one else can do."
She was not expecting that at all. She sort of knew it herself but she'd never admit it.
"But I-I'm scared Coulson. What if he ruins everything again. What if he's still a bad guy." She didn't know if she could take the chance that he might break her heart again because this time it'd break her completely and she'd had a hard enough time putting herself back together the first time - she didn't know if she could manage it a second time.
"He loves you. And this time its real. I can tell - everyone can tell. It's not some crazy obsession this time Skye. He honestly loves you and that's why he's so different around you."
Could she believe that? But it was Coulson telling her. Not anybody else who wanted them to be together, who'd nudge her and wink whenever they'd speak to each other. This was Coulson. The man who should be doing everything he can to convince her to not be with him but instead he was telling her the opposite.
"Different?" She hadn't even noticed anything.
"He's careful about what he says around you, he's shy and almost kind of insecure when your in the same room. He's a different Ward but at the same time you help him remember who he truly is. We see glimpses of the real him. His real humour, his real personality. Your as good for him as he is for you."
To Coulson it was the most obvious and simple thing in the world and it was so frustrating she couldn't see that. For god's sake even FitzSimmons and May had somehow learned to get along with him and somewhat forgive him after seeing everything he'd done for them. If she was anybody else she would see it in a second just by the little glances he send's her to make sure she's okay.
"I'm so confused." She didn't know what anything meant anymore.
"Maybe it's time to sort it out with him. He's coming along for the mission to Egypt." He told her gently.
Maybe now she'd spoken to him - she'd give Ward a chance and just open her damn eyes for once.
"We're going to Egypt?" She smiled. She loved that about the job - never knowing where your gonna end up next.
"Yeah. Me, May, FitzSimmons, Ward and you. On the new and improved Bus it even has that fish tank we all always wanted" Her mind instantly drifted to a few years ago - to the different countries they'd visited together, all the times they'd saved the world as a team. Their plans for a fish tank and the fish they'd picked out before Fury put an end to that plan with just a few words.
"The old team AC." She smiled.
"Yeah just like old times I guess." He smiled too.
She didn't think that'd be too bad.
