Only the Best Friend

In my line of reading, and the books my mother has insisted I read, I have noticed something.

Not a big something, but something important to me. Or, rather, something that caught my eye.

In all those waste-of-publication "girl advice" books on crushes or growing up, I've have never, ever seen advice on being in love with your guy-best friend.

Sure, they'll give those pathetic, crappy suggestions for admiring a boy from afar…

But never if they are your best friend…

Funny how things work.

Maybe so few of those air-headed girls who actually write to those authors have never been brave enough to go to talk to the boy, become his friend, his most loyal friend. A friend he can trust with anything. His life, his secrets, his feelings….everything.

And because of that, there is never any sappy advice on such a story.

Like mine.

My name is Mitchie Torres, and I am in love with my best friend, Nathan Gray.

I never meant for it to happen. Never!

But my other best friend, Shane, cousin/band mate of Nate, introduced us.

It was love at first sight.

For me, anyway.

From the moment I looked into his chocolate eyes.

Not so much for him, I'm sure.

But, oh, how I wish it had been…

I've spent many hours in Nate's company sense the introduction, growing slowly closer to him, until the point that I could safely call him my best friend.

All the while, however…my heart wanted more. More than friendship.

And so did I.

I'm s good actress, which meant I kept my heart and affection secret.

As much time I've spent with my best friend, I've probably daydreamed about him…us…for twice that much time…

(Dream)

The alarm was screeching. People were screaming as the ground exploded under their feet, as buildings crumpled to rubble beside them.

He drags me along by my hand. "Come on!" he shouts over the chaos of the new World War. "We have to find a place to hide!"

An explosion sends us to the ground…five feet from where we'd taken our last step. I cover my head, until he is pulling me up again.

"Nate!" I scream, grabbing his shoulder. "Nate, wait, I have to tell you something!"

"What?" He doesn't look at me.

Why doesn't he look at me?!

And then I realize…he's trying to find a place to save his life.

Our lives.

"Nate, look at me!" I shake him. "Nate...I love you."

His eyes widen. "Really?" he whispers.

I nod. Another explosion shakes the Earth, but we ignore it, leaning closer until our lips meet…

(End Dream)

Okay, cheesy. And yeah, I believe there's going to be a WW3.

Sue me.

But that is one of my favorite, most dramatic daydreams.

Another comes to mind when I learned he'd asked out my friend, Caitlyn Gellar.

(Dream)

I see them, down the hall, gripping hands. Nate stares down at the ground while Caitlyn speaks.

"I'm sorry, Nate," she says.

"Cait…please…"

"I'm sorry.

And she leaves him bleeding.

"Nate?" I asked, approaching. "Are…you okay?"

He shakes his head, so I do the first thing that comes to mind.

I hug him. I pull him close and comfort him.

He returns the hug, and it lasts…

Forever.

(End Dream)

Oh geez.

I'm pathetic.

He adores Caitlyn, and she adores him.

Who am I, after all?

I'm just the best friend.

Now and Forever.

(No offense if some was taken by my view on those girl-books. I do not mean any insult.)
