The Ring

Clare Edwards looked down at the hand Eli was holding. The one that wore her purity ring. Every so often, Eli's thumb would brush it unconsciously, then jerk away. They had never discussed it, but Eli knew it was very important to her. But growing less and less important every minute she spent with Eli. She read the words. True love waits. Waits for what? She used to believe it meant you waited until you got married. But maybe it meant you waited for true love. She knew she truly did love Eli, but sometimes she wasn't sure if he truly loved her. Mainly because he had never told her he did. Clare kept waiting for it. She was way too shy to tell him first. Eli spoke, interrupting her thoughts.

"Clare?"

"Yes, Eli?"

"I…" He lost his concentration in the beautiful blue of her eyes. "I love you, Clare. You're a beautiful, amazing person and I don't want to spend another minute without you."

Clare's breath caught. "I love you too, Eli." Eli's favorite shy smile spread across her face.

He leaned down and kissed her softly, not wanting to scare her. So he was surprised when she kissed him back as hard as she could. When they finally broke apart, Clare took off her ring and handed it to Eli.

"Here, I don't need this anymore."
