I am silent, careful not to move a single muscle in my body, careful not to make a sound. I don't want to wake her. She looks so peaceful, so perfect. Her soft brown curls frame her delicate face and her cheeks are flushed a rosy pink from the heat.
"Mmm," Renesmee murmurs and for a second I think I've woken her. I lean back, desperately wishing she'd go back to sleep but she is nowhere near awake. She rolls over in her sleep and sighs heavily. I wonder what she's thinking about and what her worries are. I would take them away in an instant if I had the chance. She's so beautiful and yet she doesn't even know it. Renesmee Carlie Cullen. The daughter of my best friend, the light in my world. Of course she doesn't know it yet but one day, one day soon, she will find out just how much she means to me. She is everything to me. I would do anything for her. She is my imprintee. She's growing up so quickly and we're both growing together. I'm her best friend and she's mine, that's the way it's always been. But I want things to change, I want her to love me the way I love her. I can hear Renesmee's steady breathing – in, out, in, out. There's so much I want to say to her if only I had the chance. I'd tell her how much I love her, how she's the one thing that kept me going after Bella changed, how she brings me hope and happiness every day. I know it may be a while before she feels the same way, if she ever feels the same way but I'm willing to wait. I'll wait an eternity if I have to. Slowly I get up from the sofa where Renesmee lies asleep and I walk over to her head. Gently I brush back her curls and bend down to whisper in her ear.
"I love you."
Through the curtains the light begins to shine through, Renesmee will be awake soon. I stand up and glance once more at her. Renesmee Cullen, beautiful Nessie. If only you knew how much I love you. If you only gave me the chance to show you. But until that time, I'll wait for you. As I carefully leave the living room I look back once more and say as loud as I dare "I love you Renesmee." Then I shut the door and go back to reality – the reality where I am nothing more than a good friend to her. One day, one day your time will come Jacob I thought to myself. "One day." I repeated softly.
