Summary: Matt will always stay true to Mello. He wants Mello to do the same.

When Mello left the orphanage, Matt found that nothing was interesting again. No one else around him was as close to him as Mello had been, though Near had extended an offer to work together. Matt refused. It felt like a betrayal to Mello. He immersed himself in video games, mindlessly sucking his brain dry because he couldn't see why he should be bothered anymore. Near was working on the Kira case, and Matt could only assume Mello was doing the same, in his own way. He didn't know why Mello couldn't have taken him with him.
When he met his best friend again, Matt had long since left Whammy's and done a lot of digging through information. He walked through smoldering remains of a building and lit a cigarette on a piece of still-burning wood. The smoke that billowed from his lips blended in with the sky, and he walked until he came across a red and black body lying on the rocky ground, trembling hand stretched out to crawl further away.
"Hey, Mello." he said, crouching down next to the semi-conscious boy, his throat thick at the sight of the heavy burns covering the blonde's left side. "You're a mess."
Mello looked at him, and the hand that had stretched out to crawl away reached up now, shaking violently with the effort, to cup Matt's cheek. Matt grabbed the hand and held it there while Mello finally passed out, then he lifted his friend up and took him to his car. When Mello woke up again, he was swathed in bandages and lying down on Matt's bed, in his apartment. And Matt walked in again with some chocolate and Mello nearly passed out again from the overwhelming sense of relief that washed over him.
Matt hardly ever left his side after that, only going out for groceries. They would end up talking whenever they could, and Mello told him all about working with the mafia and the things he had found out. Matt told him about how the orphanage wasn't the same without him, and about Near's offer, and was rather pleased at the sour look Mello made when he told him that. He told him about how he found out where Mello was, and the fear that gripped his heart when he felt the explosion, driving miles away. When Mello told him he was going to continue working the Kira case, Matt nodded and turned to him.
"Just take me with you this time."
