Yue/Sokka Avatar The Last Airbender

Only of the Moon

In another place and time, alternate futures exist. They always have. We just never look hard enough, or we never take a simple moment to search for it. Life is short and we try to make the best of it. But to just slow down to catch a glimpse of what could have been, makes a person feel their life was...worth living. It's a precious moment, one that lasts forever, and yet fades faster than the blink of an eye...

And Sokka was just one of the lucky few to see it.

He was holding her hand, their fingers entwined. Her head lay on his shoulder, her white hair pulled into it's natural sweeping braids and buns. She was smiling up at him, her eyes aglow with happiness.

Yue.

The name touched a soft spot in Sokka's heart. One that he had thought to have healed over, and yet was still uncovered.

Yue.

Only of the moon. The beauty of the sea. The woman that could have been, should have been, and would have been all his own. But time was strange, and many things took a different course.

Yue.

Her eyes danced away. They came to focus on a little girl running around in the snow. Her parka hood had fallen off her head, revealing silver hair that matched the flakes falling from the sky. She waved at them, a grin on her face. Her eyes were different. Not the blue like Yue's, but rather the gray like his own.

She had Sokka's eyes.

She continued to run around in the snow, laughing and twirling as she did so. Yue giggled, her hand clasping tighter to his. The other ran over her belly...a very prominent belly. She was pregnant...again.

Sokka watched the little girl pay. He had never felt such caring and loving emotions as he had for that one child. The one child that would never be...and the other, still unborn, would never follow.

Yue squeezed his hand. He looked down at her. She was staring at him funny, her expression confused. She looked almost...worried.

So he kissed her.

And he poured everything into that kiss that he had never been given the chance before to do so. The little girl's laughter filled his ears, and the hand on Yue's stomach felt the slight kick of the child inside. For the moment, everything was perfect...

And then it all disappeared...

There have always been alternate futures. Some people have the chance to see them, and others don't.

Sokka was just one of the lucky few to see it.

And as he stared at the moon, he knew she was staring back.

Yue.

The woman that could have been, should have been, would have been...

Yue.

Only of the moon...
