Begin

"Once upon a time, in the castle beyond the Goblin City, there was a great battle. It was mainly a battle of wills. A silly girl said her right words and wished away her little brother, but once there were consequences for her actions she changed her mind."

"But if she said the right words then she can't do that! If you say the right words, then what's said is said and you hafta accept it! Right, daddy?"

"That's right son, but you understand the right words and this girl was too silly to accept what she'd done. She went to the Goblin King's lands and accepted the challenge of his labyrinth. He gave her thirteen hours to fight her way to her brother. Very generous of the king I think."

"Yeah."

"The king tried to convince the girl to leave her brother; he offered her her dreams. But the girl would not be swayed. She fought and tricked her way straight to the castle, used the king's own subjects against him, and turned down the king's offer of love and marriage. She broke the king's heart and his castle, but returned home with her brother."

"That's mean. Why did she have to break the king?"

"I don't know my boy. She knew the king loved her, knew it well enough to throw it in his face the next time she saw him. He came to her offering her dreams and his heart once more, but she denied him. She called him a kidnapper, a thief, and a monster. She blamed him for doing as she asked and hated the reminder of her own bad behavior. She sent the king away with his heart broken again."

"Poor king."

"Just wait. The king kept watch over her, loving her in spite of cruel ways, and eventually saw her marry another man. It sent him into a rage and he went a little mad knowing someone had the woman who should have been his queen. He watched her grow round with the other man's child and it gave the king an idea. He waited thirteen months after the child was born before tricking the girl's idiot husband into saying the right words. The man was no match for the labyrinth path the king set him on and the boy was lost to the human world."

"Did he make the boy a goblin?"

"No, the king had bigger plans for the boy. He made the boy his son and heir to the throne. He raised the boy up as his own and loved him like he were the boy's real father. Now, time for sleep."

"But dad, what happened to the girl? Did the king ever get her back? Did she miss the boy?"

"Ah-ah, story time is over and sleep time has begun. Ask your questions tomorrow night."

"Okay. I guess. Goodnight daddy."

"Goodnight my little prince."
