AN: I know there's heaps of fic's coming out of the finale, but the final line of this story just would not let me go until I wrote this. I do not own the series blah blah blah… though I wouldn't mind owning Katie McGrath. There may be some mistakes if there is please let me know so I can fix them.
Merlin stumbled up the hill that Kilgharrah had effortlessly flown him and Arthur down. Arthur. His king. His best friend. His brother. Gone. But not forever, no one day he would be back. And he would be there to see it, guide him and protect him. Just like he always was.
The warlock continued to walk through the sea of trees, following the feeling inside him telling him he was heading towards Camalot. He continued like this for what could have been hours or mere minutes for all Merlin knew before he felt another tug inside of him, this one much stronger and something he couldn't ignore. He picked up his pace, finding himself running before he knew it, heading towards whatever was pulling him so strongly. What is it? Merlin asked himself as the tugging sensation got stronger by the second. He got his answer a moment later as he entered the clearing where Morgana lay and the feeling stopped abruptly.
He stood there silently, the numbness he had felt when killing her fading as he felt a pressure building in his chest, aching to be released along with the tears that had started sliding down his face. He slowly fell to his knees at the edge of the clearing, as the sobs finally broke free. He clamped a hand over his mouth in a desperate attempt to stop or at least muffle his sobs, as he stared at her open, lifeless eyes.
When he finally regained control, he slowly shuffled over to her side, never taking his eyes off hers.
"Oh Morgana" he whispered sorrowfully. "I wish it hadn't ended like this. I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry."
Gently he raised his hand and closed her eyes. There he though, now with her eyes closed, her face relaxed and her black clothes concealing the blood from her fatal wound, she looked like she could have been sleeping. Oh how he wished she was only sleeping.
"I thought I could save you" He started. "All those years ago when Kilgharra told me what you would become, I thought I could save you. It never would have crossed my mind that this was how it would all end. But you did, didn't you? That's why you were always so afraid. Because you knew something like this would happen."
He stopped for a moment to stroke her smooth cheek and push back the lump in his throat threatening to break his composure.
"You fought against it as hard as I did, but in the end it doesn't matter. We're all just pieces in Destiny and Fates game of chess. Just like Arthur and I will be again when he comes back." Merlin gave a humourless chuckle. "And I'm sure you'll be back as well."
With one last look at Morgana he rose to his feet and started of towards Camalot once more, barely pausing at the edge of the clearing as he said;
"For what is light without darkness?"
