This is a short kind-of-sort-of one shot, though I won't reveal the pairing yet :D You're all very smart though, it won't take you too long to figure it out once the details fall into place :) It was inspired by the song You and Me, by Lifehouse. I won't post the lyrics in the fic because I hear that is now against the rules :P But if you want, you can look them up and see where they come in in this story :) Oh! And by the way, this takes place at the Yule Ball :D Narrows it down a bit :) Enjoy!
I don't know how I've missed it, all this time.
How I didn't see her for what she truly was.
I can't stop just taking her in, looking at her, even if it's a bit rude, considering we're in public. Maybe it's the music, the boredom caused by the awkwardness of those around me, or maybe it's just something I've known all along, and just realized on the night of all nights.
She starts drifting back onto the dance floor again, during another slow song, slipping between people, and I carefully move to keep up with her. To hell with it all, I'm determined to dance with her, even if I can only hold her tonight, it is enough. I catch up, and I tap her on the shoulder. She turns, smiling, maybe expecting another, but it dims when she sees me. I try to get out an invitation to dance, but I can't seem to form the right string of words to create the sentence I need to speak aloud.
"I- I mean, I was hoping- maybe- dance with me?" I finally spat out. I never had such trouble with words in my life, even when I was young. She raised an eyebrow, but nodded warily, not knowing what my intentions were. We begin to sway, then step, and repeat, in an awkward beginning to the dance. But then, as we melt into the notes of the song, everything else dies away. I only see her, and how radiant she is in this moment, even dancing with the last person anyone would expect her to. I begin to spin us in wider, more graceful circles, taking the lead, and she gladly follows, a smile slowly spreading on her face. I place my hands on her waist and hoist her into the air, and as she squeals in shock as we twirl, a full-blown grin appears on her lips. I grin back as I bring her back to Earth- back to me. But then the song comes to a close, even as I hold her just a bit closer, I know it has to end. But not before I place a kiss on her forehead, and wish her a good night. Then, as I fade back into the shadows where I belong, I take in the scene, and am content, for now. And in this moment, alone with my happy thoughts and blank gaze at the crowd, it's all I need.
