He hadn't set out to take the diary. No, he just wanted to see it and hold it for a short while.
But something deep within him wanted the honor of owning a piece of the Dark Lord's soul even if the Dark Lord didn't willingly give it to him.
The Dark Lord had easily given a piece of his soul to Bellatrix. Well two pieces if he counted the diary that he had stolen from his sister in law.
He feared what would become of him if Bellatrix found out it was gone. What the Dark Lord would do once she went running to him.
And Bellatrix would go to him, she was always with him. Both would say it was because he was teaching her the dark arts.
But Lucius wasn't a fool, you just didn't hand over parts of your soul to somebody you were merely teaching.
He didn't know who he was jealous of, Bellatrix for getting to be with the Dark Lord or the Dark Lord for getting to be with Bellatrix.
