Here's a drabble for you. Didn't take me too long, probably less than an hour. I wanted to write a mermaid fic, but, as usual, I don't have a plot line. I think it's better if this remains a drabble; after all, the subject is cliche... But if I have any ideas, I'll try to turn this into a story. I apologize for the formatting. The spacing in the song didn't work out too well, and I don't know how to fix it. It's supposed to be four lines in a stanza, so keep that in mind while reading. Please take the time to review. Comments are greatly appreciated! I really want to know what you guys think. Enjoy!
The bright glow of the moon and the sounds of the waves were comforting as he walked alone along the edge of the beach. The sand felt cool and cushiony against his sore feet, and the fresh sea breeze brushed strands of his red hair out of his eyes. Sleep had once again eluded him, and so he sought solace on the empty beach. He gazed out onto the endless sea and began to hear the faint strains of someone singing...
The moon is full, the tide is high,
The sailing ships have passed on by.
The waves roll and winds roar
and moonlight bathes the sandy shore.
But far down beneath, the creatures sleep,
No light can pierce the ocean's deep,
The inky blackness consumes them all
And hapless ships, should they ever fall.
He was frozen in place, staring at an unearthly scene. A mermaid sat, with her tail tucked beside her, out in the open bay on a lonely rock jutting out from the ocean's surface. The moonlight glanced off the deep azure of her scales, and bathed her pale skin in a pearly glow. Her damp hair was a midnight hue, and trailed along the length of her body down to the water's edge. He listened, transfixed, as she continued her haunting melody.
The sea is vast, her restless waves conceal
A wealth of which humans will never know
The mysterious treasures are safe in the deep
No diver can pilfer the Kraken's keep.
The mermaid suddenly turned her head and stared straight at him with dark blue eyes.
"Eyes like the ocean..." he thought, his brain still muddled to think of anything else. He saw the corners of her mouth lift into a mischievous smile as she flipped her fin against the rock. She continued her song, now aiming her words directly at the young man.
I have your ear, I hold you in thrall
As you listen to my siren's call
It cannot be ignored, no! Hear its pull
Undeniable as the moon when full.
See me giggle, see me grin,
This is a prize you'll never win.
I'll disappear without a trace
I return into the sea's embrace.
He heard a splash, then all was still. He stood alone, left with the sound of waves and the moon bearing silent witness to the scene below.
So, what do you think? Leave a review and let me know. And if you know how to fix my spacing problem, please tell me!
