I had this idea for a long time, but i just now got around to writing it. I don't have a beta, so sorry for any mistakes. This is set during the Son of Neptune after Percy left the voice mail at his mom's house.
Disclaimer: I don't own the Percy Jacksons and I never will
Sally Jackson was exhausted, but filled with a new hope. She found a ray of sunlight in the middle of the smothering darkness that came in the form of a one minute recording.
Sally walked out of her and Paul's room only to see the blinking red light on her answering machine that indicated she had a voice mail. She must have missed a call last night, although she never heard the phone ring. She walked over to the telephone and set the recording to play. Her son's voice rang out, causing her knees to give out, and she landed on the couch set in the middle of their living room.
Her son. Sally hadn't heard Percy's voice in eight months and the sound brought tears to her eyes. She listened as he talked, her tears threatening to fall as he tried to explain what had happened to him. Her baby boy. She worry clouded her mind as he mentioned the quest he was on with great hesitation. Another quest that could easily get him killed, as usual. Sally tried not to think of this fact as she listened to the rest of the recording.
Percy ended the voice mail by promising that he would make it home. He told her he loved her. That was all she needed to reassure herself somewhat. She knew the type of young man Percy had grown into. He would never break a promise to her. She believed in him.
Paul walked into the living room to see his wife staring at a picture of his stepson that she held in her hand, a small smile on her face. Sally hadn't smiled in a long time. He looked at her questionably, and she just pointed towards the answering machine. Paul was still confused, so she stood and set the voice mail to play. They sat down on the couch together, and he wrapped his arms around his wife, listening to the recording with an emotion that was somewhat bittersweet.
They knew Percy would make it back, it was just a matter of waiting. And waiting was the hardest part.
