Blood Stains

They were so close. Close enough to get a taste of sweet victory on their tongues. But just when they where about to grasp it the rug was pulled out from under their feet and victory fell from Colonel Mustang and his teams reach.

Their allies, once proved trustworthy, compromised them and made sure they where signaled out as the culprits, ensuring that when they where captured they would be charged with treason. And treason always meant death by the firing squad in the country of Amnetris.

On the day of the execution as they where marched out to the grounds Colonel Mustang said, "Look them in the eye, that way they'll remember you."

Whether he meant it as an order or as advice they didn't know nor did they have the time to find out.

One by one they where marched out in front of the firing squad, shot, then dragged away on a tarp. One by one Mustang watched his team. First Breda, then Falman, then Furey, and then Havoc. Their blood spilling out onto the concrete, staining it with a reddish tint.

You are not allowed to die before I do.

Then it was Mustang's turn. He was shoved from the side of his loyal lieutenant and marched to stand in front of the firing squad. Standing tall he looked into the eyes of the men that would be his executioners, as he had told his team to do not so long ago. Now most of them where dead and he would soon follow, then Hawkeye would follow him as she promised she would again and again.

I'll follow you into hell if you like.

But for now she stood to the side, waiting her turn to face the firing squad.

Squaring his shoulders he waited for the signal to be given, the rifles fired, and his life to be over.

The men cocked and aimed their rifles, Mustang could see his life starting to flash before his eyes. He saw his childhood, his years at school, his years studying under Hawkeye's father, his years in Ishval and his recent years in the military.

Then he saw Hawkeye standing in front of him. At first he thought it was just another memory. But once when he realized that it was not the past but the present, he felt is heart fill with a mix of sorrow and joy.

There's someone I need to protect.

Their eyes met and all that needed to be said was said in those few brief moments when their eyes where locked.

Once the signal was given he swore he could have seen a small smile grace his lieutenant's lips, smiling at him. The rifles where fired and before he knew it his beloved lieutenant was laying before him dead, her blood spilling and adding more red tint to the already blood stained concrete.

"You've always said you'd follow me, now I'm following you," thought Mustang as he watched them drag Hawkeye's body away.

Slowly he lifted his gaze from the ground where Hawkeye's body once lay and met the eyes of the firing squad once more, just in time for them to pull the triggers and end the promising life of Colonel Roy Mustang.

A/N: HAPPY ROYAI DAY 2010! this was based off a prompt a friend gave me after we watched Valkeryie, which if you do watch there are a lot of fma similarities. We found that the ending was very royai-ish. ya know colonel and lieutenant...unquestionable loyalty...goal driven! you get the idea. so this is my take on it. i hope u like. I know its depressing but so was valkeryie. If you love fma and havent seen the movie yet...WATCH VALKERYIE, its depressing but its good. and at certain angles eye-patch tom cruise resembles or just plain looks like eye-patch roy mustang. Its freaky!
