Wearing That Smile

It felt like an eternity, staring at his face now. She thought that she'd never see him again, let alone be fighting him. It was impossible to prevent the flood of memories that washed their way through her head.

When she first met him, she had collapsed on the road from hunger and he'd given her something to eat. It was then that they decided that her birthday would be the day that she met him.

He was wearing that smile, even then.

One time in the academy, she had bumped into him and she started to splutter uncontrollably about how sorry she was. He just stood and listened. He never bothered to help pick up her books. She knew she was trapped.

He was still wearing that smile.

The time when she'd blocked Shinso from impaling Momo, she'd gathered all her strength and willpower to stand up to him and say that she'd fight him if he didn't back down. She barely noticed that Shinso had cracked Haineko.

He was still wearing that smile.

The time when she was holding her sword at his neck, his smile had slipped for a second, but came back full force. As he left, he said that he wished she could've held onto him a little while longer.

He was still wearing that smile.

Now, as their swords were at each other's necks again, their faces centimeters apart.

Hers was twisted in fury and heartbreak.

His was still wearing that smile.

The one she had fallen in love with. The one she'd learned to trust. The one that had betrayed them all. The one that was threatening to kill her right now.

"Ain't this a coincidence, Ran-chan?" he asked in a cheery tone.

She didn't answer him.

He sighed. "I guess you ain't gonna forgive me."

Still silence.

"Ya know that tha silent treatment won't work on me, Ran."

"Would you rather me stay quiet or scream at you about how fucking betrayed I feel right now?!"

"Maybe silence is better..." Gin murmured as he began to lean forward, not flinching when Haineko dug into his neck.

"What do you think you're doing?" she growled.

"Sayin' goodbye for the first time..." Gin closed the space between them and the two swords pushed further into the shinigamis' necks.

Rangiku almost choked, but was able to hold the blood down. Maybe this was the best way to die... in front of the one you love as they die as well.

"Goodbye, Ran-chan..." Gin said in a strangled whisper.

All the strength in Rangiku's limbs suddenly drained away and she collapsed. Gin's strength was just as diminished, and without her to hold him up, he fell on top of her. His body landed horizontally across hers.

"Goodbye... Gin..." Rangiku mumbled through the blood as she faded. She managed to muster up enough strength to clasp his hand in hers.

When someone found them, they didn't expect to see the two holding hands and wearing a smile.

That wasn't all that great, but I had an idea and it wouldn't leave me alone 'til I got rid of it...
