Part One

last christmas, i gave you my heart

but the very next day you gave it away

this year, to save me from tears

i'll give it to someone special

"Eiri, please come here for Christmas. I'd rather you not spend the holidays alone." Tohma stretched his free arm over his head, touching the back of his chair. The phone pressed to his ear was warm from the length of time he'd been speaking with Eiri. Even if he'd been the one doing most of the speaking.

"I told you. I want to spend this Christmas alone. I don't need anybody bugging me with all this holiday shit."

"Mika is going to Kyoto to be with your parents. It would be just you and I. Doesn't that sound nice?"

"Oh, yeah," Eiri said sarcastically. "Sounds like a riot." Tohma sighed, turning his chair to face the window. They hadn't gotten any snow this year, which killed him; he'd hoped he could persuade Eiri by reminding him of the snow-covered Christmas they'd spent together. That had been a different year than the bad one. That was when Eiri was still full of innocence and love, when they still took baths together and helped each other pick out their clothes. But, of course, those days were over.

"Just think about it. My door will be open."

"You shouldn't leave it open. Who knows who'll get in there."

"Then maybe you'll have to come and make sure no one does," Tohma replied smoothly, but Eiri hung up before he could finish his sentence. Tohma looked up at the city lights on the other side of the window, taking off his hat and letting it rest in his lap.

"Hm. All that mistletoe on every doorway for nothing."
