Right Back Atcha

Rated T – English- Family/Comfort- Brendan B & Declan B. Complete.

A/N A nano-shot. This is my first go, please let me know, what you think.

It all started when he said we needed to talk. Those words never bode well. So we did. We both stood side-by-side in the kitchen, making a beverage of our choice. Me coffee, him herbal tea. We sat down sedately at the table.

That was the last time my world was sepia-toned. After our chat my world burst into frightening technicolour, with a side-order of white noise.

There was silence, initially and then.

"Da, I'm not just vegetarian, I'm gay too".

I exhaled the breath I didn't realise I'd been holding. I knew this already. Chez had given me the heads-up, but I felt it was an important step for him to actually tell me.

What to do? What to say? How to be convincing? When really I feel like the guy in Edvard Munch's painting, screaming for all eternity.

"Mum already knows" he said, surprising me further.

I turned my eyes towards him. I could only look at him with love.

"You're my kid, my son, my own flesh and blood. You're a part of me. I'll always love ye. Ye know don't ye?"

His face flooded with relief. He sat up a bit straighter and looked at me directly for the first time.

"These past few weeks have been great Da and well I've been watching you too" he said.

There was a pause.

"Um an' I was wondering, when were you going to tell me you're gay too?"

"What the .." I almost dropped my mug I was so stunned, causing coffee to spill down my pristine button-down shirt.

"Pardon me?"

"Da, come on, Ste, really? I know he's your friend."

He said friend whilst making the inverted commas gesture with his fingers.

"I've seen the way you look at him, when you think no-one's looking. The way you are around him. Why didn't you tell me?"

I died right then and there.
