Between Great Men and Little Men
"An invincible determination can accomplish almost anything and in this lies the great distinction between great men and little men." – Thomas Fuller
Martin knew what it was like to win and lose.
As the bastard son of a whore and then as a mercenary, he had his taste of the good and the bad. Admittedly he had experienced more of the bad than the good, but he still knew the sweet taste of the good life.
It had tasted best when he had Agnes in his life.
The moment he saw her he knew he was lost. One look into those doe eyes was all it took to make his heart surrender. He had loved women in his life before, oh yes, but never in the way that he loved her. If she had asked for it, he would have given her the whole damn world.
But in the end it had not been the world she wanted, but a damn scholar.
It drove him insane to think of them together. His devious angel with that little boy; walking on his arm as they once did. Sharing a life together, a name, a home, and a child.
His child.
Martin wasn't stupid. He knew the boy was his no matter what his name was. The scholar could claim to God himself that the child was his and Martin still wouldn't buy it. That was his boy with his smile and her eyes looking back at him.
And he would be damned if he didn't get his woman and child back.
So Martin planned and waited. He knew he could not reclaim what belonged to him without strong arms backing him up. So he recruited mercenaries and fought battles until he had his own guild of swords under him. It took him years but he was getting there.
He didn't care if Agnes didn't want him even now. It was never a choice for either of them. They were drawn together, they made a child together and so they were meant to be together. His boy was young enough that he wouldn't even know any different.
Steven thought he won and Agnes thought it was over but Martin knew better. It would never be over until he had claimed back what was rightfully his from the start. Like a circle, he knew the three of them were entwined forever more until one of them broke it with death.
And damned it Martin would allow that death to be his.
