It was the third time Emma glanced up to find Regina's eyes on her. Twice, the Queen had glanced away, a slight flush taking over her features; this time, she held Emma's gaze. The blonde only looked at Regina for a moment, taking in how cautiously she sat in her seat; almost as if she was ready to be attacked at any second. She probably was. It was sad, especially now that Emma understood a little more about the reasons Regina acted the way she did.
Emma offered a small smile, one which Regina actually returned. Emma found herself surprised at this - they were hardly cordial, let alone inclined to smile at each other. But the Savior wanted Regina's acceptance into society, so she knew she would continue offering those smiles. And she did, every time she caught Regina staring at her that night.
Every time, Regina returned them.
By the end of the night, Emma knew there was a dangerous chance of falling for Henry's adoptive mother. Evil Queen or not, Regina Mills was trying, and Emma knew she could save her. Even at the expense of her own feelings.
