It was the way it had always been. Find a place, settle, leave the place.
The job, would generally be one that was not so powerful, so glamorous, but always in a secret way, righteous, putting good in place of wrong. So much, he could say that he had learned from his father. Perhaps he was doing it on purpose, letting down the only family he had left, even though that one remaining member may have stopped looking down long ago.
Every time his father had looked down and blatantly told him how much of a failure he was, his world would crack again, until there was nothing left but shattered pieces of glass digging in until the hurt was a constant. It never stopped hurting, and he never stopped hiding how much it did.
Though they had long stopped talking, the words still haunt him at night. And they kept him from making any true friends, for as long his façade was on, there was no real him. Sure, he hung out with his colleagues occasionally, maybe had fun once in a while, but every single time he had truly been enjoying himself, he would come again. Sometimes he saw him, sometimes he could just hear the words echoing in the back of his mind, pounding in their sole meaning. It made him leave, and he would be lonely once more.
After awhile, he just stopped making the effort. He pulled on the persona that pushed people away. Loud, obnoxious, womanizing. Just to name a few. The fact that he was almost always right just contributed to overall effect. The jobs came and went. The police business had been by far the most interesting, but it was nearing the two year take it or leave it deadline. None of his partners ever liked him, a plus he supposed, he didn't like them either. Transference were at a weekly basis now, seems they were tiring of him as well. A pity though, something about investigating, finding the truth behind the fake walls seemed to compel him.
It did not matter though, it was time to move on.
A/N- Tell me what you think. Was it out of character? Good? Bad? All kinds of critique are welcome.
