When Sarah was little, her mother used to pull her onto her lap while they sat on the sofa in front of the fire late at night and murmur to her. She used to love it when her mother held her, so tight. She would feel loved and happy while her mother cuddled her and kissed her dark hair.
"You're my Eden, Sarah," her mother would say while she nuzzled her neck. "You, your father, here in this house—it's perfection. That's what an Eden is, you know. Perfection." Sarah would giggle at the sensation of her mother's breathe brushing over her skin and squirm happily in her arms. Then her mother would turn her on her lap so they were face to face, her dark eyes boring seriously into her daughters and Sarah would grow quiet.
"You need to listen to me, Sarah, this is important." Sarah would nod and try to listen to her mother's words. "This is my Eden, Sarah, but that doesn't mean it's yours. When you're old enough, I want you to leave here and go off in search of your Eden. Don't stop until you find it, Sarah. It may take awhile, but you will find it, Sarah, someday. And it will be worth it." Then her mother would smile, her eyes sparkling, and hug her tightly.
Sarah was too young to understand what her mother was talking about then—only twelve—but now she could remember her mother's wise words with perfect clarity, and now she understood them. So, with her house—her old life—burning down around her, she set off to find her own Eden, just like her mother had told her to so long ago.
