It was Friday, after a tough week of work, Toph's shift was finally over. She was sick of the mountain of papers gathered on her desk. She liked her job because she was able to fight criminals and such but she absolutely hated the days, weeks or even months of paperwork and only paperwork. As Toph was leaving the building she got a message from Aang.
Twinkeltoes️: Hey, are you still coming to the café, I'm already there.
BlindBandit: I just got out of work, Twinkletoes. You can wait, I know you're patient.
Twinkeltoes: I'm patient, I just wondered when you'll be here, nothing else.
BlindBandit: Sure Twinkletoes.
The rain was pouring loudly from outside as Toph left the building and opened up her green umbrella. She walked for a few minutes 'till she was standing at the corner of the street, the little cafe right in front of her.
The cafe was never full which was a good thing because fewer people meant lower chances to meet paparazzi, also one of the things Toph hated about being at the top of her career.
The door loudly opened and Toph entered the café. She saw Aang wave his hand as he saw her enter, and walked to the table he was sitting at. A waiter walked towards their table and asked: "What would you two like to order?".The duo came to this exact café every Friday. Normally they would just have to say "the usual" and the waiter will go get their drinks, but they quickly realized that the café had a new employee.
Toph was the first to speak up. She quietly asked Aang if he wanted the usual and Aang nodded affirmatively. Then, not a second later, she told the waiter their order "A black coffee for me and a hot chocolate for my friend here".The employee wrote down the order and then said "Coming right up" as he left the duo to their business.
"So Twinkletoes, did anything interesting happen this week?"Toph asked "It's been a boring week. Some fire nation rebels were protesting about how they don't trust the F.U.N and that it made their lives worse after the war. During the war, they were filthy rich and now are just commoners. We had to have numerous meetings about this, very long very boring meetings ."Aang replied,
"That sounds way more interesting than my week, I've been buried in papers for the past month. No action, nothing."Toph complained "Well look at the bright side, tomorrow you get to teach at the dojo, you'll have plenty of action there" Aang added "Twinkletoes, you always see a bright side, don't you "Toph remarked "You say it like it's a bad thing"Aang said "So you finally get sarcasm"Toph raised an eyebrow "I've known you for years Toph I'm used to your sarcastic humour by now"Aang pointed out.
The waiter came and set their respective drinks and the guest check on the table. They of course paid and then continued their conversation as soon as the waiter left earshot.
Toph glanced at the cafes' live band and spoke after sipping her coffee "Twinkletoes, do you remember when we had band classes in high school?" "Of course I remember I had math in the class next door while you had music class, we could never concentrate because you played that guitar way too loudly"Aang replied "It's not my fault they placed those classes that close to each other while having thin walls" Toph added "I suppose you're right, I guess I never had that problem since I played the flute" Aang remarked.
After that there were a few minutes in which they sipped their hot drinks and listened to the band, neither said a word.
Then, as Aang finished his drink he remembered something he needed to say."I almost forgot to tell you, the renovations at my house have been finished and all the paint has dried. So now I can take Appa back home. Thank you for taking care of him for the past week. I hope it didn't bother you."Aang said "Stop worrying so much, Twinkeltoes. It didn't bother me at all. I mean sure he sometimes fought with Momo, but you came in the morning to walk Appa and all, it really wasn't that big of a deal. You've been so worried lately, before I got here you seemed worried about me not coming, even tho we have gone here every Friday since college. Has something happened?"Toph noticed.
" Well, I've been very stressed with work, as I said earlier but I was just worried about you, this was a big favour to ask and I didn't know, maybe Appa was a burden to yo-" "You do realize you're not making any sense right now. Why would Appa be a burden? And even if he was, this isn't such a big favour giving the fact that I'm your best friend." Toph interrupted.
Aang stayed silent for a moment. What Toph said was very true, but he didn't know why he felt like he was asking for so much from Toph. Was taking care of Appa for a week that big of a favour? It didn't seem like it since Toph knew Appa since he was a puppy. He didn't know why he felt like this and it scared him.
"Cheer up, Twinkeltoes. Where's the carefree optimist, I've known my whole life. I'm not good at this hole mushy feely stuff but just know that I'll always be here for you, you're my bestest friend" Toph said trying to help. "Thanks, Toph," Aang said with a small smile. He still didn't know why he felt this way but knowing that Toph will be there for him made things better."It's getting late Twinkeltoes. It's not raining anymore, we should go get Appa"Toph announced "You're right, my car is parked less than a block away. I hope the rain doesn't start again or after I get Appa my car is going to smell like wet dog" Aang observed. "Than let's go, Twinkeltoes, "Toph said not wasting any more time.
They walked together to the parking lot, talking nonsense and laughing. But little did they know, someone was watching them.
As Aang started driving he noticed a black car was always right behind them but didn't pay much attention to it. Toph's apartment was in an area of town where you have to walk about a km from the street to get to the building, which wasn't that big of a problem. Toph noticed the car as well but unlike Aang, she was suspicious about it. She noticed the car had black windows which meant that it was a car owned by a news reporter." Aang, I think the car behind us is a paparazzi car "Toph said " Oh come on, It's the fourth time I changed my registration plate because of this"Aang noted. Toph only called him Aang when it was serious business. "What should we do?" he asked "There's a traffic light about 500 meters ahead, it's going to turn red before they catch us and you can leave them behind, go fast or you're going to catch a red light, "Toph said.Aang stepped on the clutch pedal like never before. The car passed the green light in the last second, and the car behind them stayed back. They arrived at the point where you couldn't drive anymore, parked the car and ran to Tophs' apartment building just so the paparazzi wouldn't catch them.
Toph opened the door to her apartment and Appa immediately ran to them and started licking their faces. Aang put Appa on his leash and said " I can't stay any longer I'm afraid they will find their way here and you know how much I hate interviews" Aang explained "Hold your horses, Twinkeltoes.I have a coat here somewhere, it could help your disguise. Plus I haven't said goodbye to Appa yet." Toph said as she started looking around her home. She found the coat easily and handed it to Aang. She got down on her knees and started petting Appa "I'm going to miss you buddy, see you soon". She got up and spoke to Aang " Bye Twinkeltoes, take care on your way back home" "Thank you Toph, for everything " Aang said "Yeah, yeah. Now go or they're going to catch up" Toph said as she held the door for him to leave. Aang got to the car in time and didn't get chased by the paparazzi, at least for now.
A/N It took me so long to write this because I kept procrastinating. This is by far the most I've written in one chapter. At least I finished it before 2019 started about 1 hour for me. I had a problem with the file and it didn't save it all of it so I had to find the save in documents. Such a burden. The idea for the chapter was inspired by kids again by artist vs Poet
