Diclaimer: I own nothing that you recognize. Made for Flitwick's prompt "Meet me by the Lake"

Blood was flowing from his neck. He cold feel himself becoming weaker and weaker as the great snake released itself from him.

All was dark and still as the potions professor quickly made his way across the grounds. The note had said to meet by the lake at midnight. A note he scoffed, being a wizard and James couldn't even send a simple patronaus. Although, that was a good thing for Snape, considering it would be awkward for James to see his...

He reached the lake and saw just what he had pictured. Dumbledore with his graying hair and beard staring intently into the depths of the lake. He seemed to be thinking, but of course he always looked like that. A few feet away from him was a wizard with crooked glasses and his hair sticking up in all directions, staring back at him lazily. Snape thought he looked just as arrogant as he had remembered him to be, if not more.

"Ahh Snape it's been awhile" He looked smug.

As if he could have anything to make his life better, Snape thought. James already had the one thing that he had always wanted.

"Potter," was all he muttered back.

"So how's life been treating you? James asked enthusiastically.

"I would assume that you have something actually worth my time, considering I have exams to prepare for."

"Oh, right, yeah sorry about that! It's just us Order Members need to ask a certain favor from our favorite little Death Eater."

The Potions Master stiffened. He stared at James with hatred and other disbelief. Was it really possible that he could have grown even more cocky over the years?

Dumbledore who had remained quiet up until this point turned from the waters and became interested with something inside his cloak. He pulled out a single yellow candy and popped it into his mouth. Then, as if suddenly remembering he had company, pulled out another one and handed it to James, who nodded his thanks.

"I know that you don't like muggle candy Severus, but James and I are both quite fond of these lemon drops." His expression changed. "But onto more serious matters. He glanced at James then looked intensely at Snape. "Severus, you surely remember the prophecy. That is why we are meeting tonight. I have the slightest feeling it may have something to do with Lily. We need for you to watch the Dark Lord's actions and tell us if he suspects the same, because I know that Voldemort happens to be very good at figuring things out."

Snape almost laughed at him. "What could you possibly be talking about? Lily has nothing to do with the prophecy."

James stepped forward, the grin on his face wider than most would think possible. He looked at Dumbledore eagerly. "You mean to say that no one has told him?" His excitement mounted. "Ha! No one bothered to tell you that my lovely wife has been expecting, Snivillus?"

All the air in his lungs left him.

"Look...at...me..." he whispered to Lily Potter's son, and with that her sweet green eyes met his cold black ones for the last time.
