Anticipation

It had seemed like a great idea at the time. She remembered doing it once as a kid, fearless and excited she was sure she remembered racing round in circles and feeling free. It's a surprise when that's not how it goes this time. She's barely got one foot on the ice before she feels it sliding away from her and she almost loses her balance, only Eliot's there behind her, catching her and letting her find her balance again.

She flushes a little embarrassed, after all this had been her idea. He'd been the one reluctant to come, only here to please her. She knows that he'd have been as happy to have brought her and sit at the side and watch her spin and twirl like she thought she'd done as a child.

She's beginning to wonder if maybe she'd embellished the experience a little in her imagination as she tries to move and finds herself wobbling away from him. She's pretty determined though as she attempts to move on. It doesn't take long before she's grabbing for the rail at the side of the rink, feet slipping and sliding out of control. She hears gentle affectionate laughter behind her.

She knows there's a pout on her face as she looks over her shoulder at Eliot. He holds out a hand, smirk still in place. "It's easy," he says as she takes his hand, "Just push . . . and glide . . . push and glide." It doesn't take long before he's tugging her round at more speed. Suddenly he's a pace or two ahead of her, and for a moment or two she's afraid he's going to let go and she's in the middle now and it's too far to reach to the rail before she falls.

He doesn't let go, instead he's turned around, he's skating backward, pulling her towards him. He's smiling and her pout breaks, forming into the smile she saves just for him. "Don't be afraid, I've got you," he says and before she knows it they're both twirling and spinning and she feels free, like nothing can stop her, and safe, because Eliot's with her.
