The sky outside was dark and lighting danced across it in bright flashes. A young woman sat outside of her small house with a straw hat placed upon her head. She gave a sigh and tucked a few strands of her bright red hair behind her ears. Her slightly baggy pants were tied at the ankles and made her ankles feel warmer than her usual robes. She rose and straightened out her shirt so it came just below her stomach then walked inside the house.
"Yu Zhu Jia where have you been?" an angry old woman said pointing a leathery finger at her.
Yu gave a great sigh and turned to face her grandmother.
"Grandmother I was outside this whole time. What did you need?" She said taking off her hat and placing it beside the door. She shut the wooden door behind her and looked up at her grandmother with pale golden eyes.
"Your mother wanted to have a word with you in her room." She said and retreated into the kitchen to begin making breakfast.
Yu walked through the hallway and only now noticed she had gone outside without her shoes on. She gave a small laugh but put on a neutral face as she approached her mothers door. She gave a light knock and heard shuffling on the other side.
"Come in." Her mother said in a light tone.
Yu opened the door and stepped in. The room was rather plain, only consisting of a small blue bed and a large dresser which contained all of her mother's clothing and head adornments.
"You wished to see me mother?" Yu said and sat next to her mother on the bed.
"My child some of the emperor's men are coming here to take you to the capital before noon." She said giving a light cough and bringing a pale hand up to rest on her shoulder.
"But why mother? Have I done something wrong?" Yu said sounding very alarmed.
"No child you have done nothing wrong. As you know the Priestess of Suzaku has arrived and some of the seishi have already begun to appear." Her mother said patting her on the shoulder.
Her mother got up and went over to her dresser. She opened the very top drawer but did not pull out an item yet.
"Yes I've been aware of that but what does any of this have to do with me?" Yu said standing up and following her mother over to the dresser and giving her a puzzled look.
"You are not my child. I didn't give birth to you." Her 'mother' said and pulled out a rather large broken egg.
"What do you mean I'm not your child?" Yu said tears coming to her eyes.
"You were born from this egg. Sixteen years ago, when I was your age, I was outside resting under a tree after working in the garden all day. There was a flash of red light and this egg was before me. Suzaku came to me later that day in a dream. He told me to take keep the egg close to a fire for three days. I was unsure of what would happen but I did as he said. Three days later the egg hatched and there you were. You were the child that I never had" Her mother said wiping away at the tears falling down her face.
"So that means...I'm a goddess?" Yu said staring at her mother in disbelief.
Her mother could only give her a nod in reply.
