"I can't believe we're fighting over The Doctor like this!" I said, frustration clear in my voice as I ran my fingers through my blonde hair. I sat on the desk in front of me and crossed my arms. "Yes, well, he is quite something." Sarah-Jane trailed off as she sat down next to me. I looked at her as she stared down at her fingers, a soft smile on her face.
I felt the corners of my lips turn up in a smile. "You loved him." I said. It wasn't a question, but a statement. She didn't look surprised, just continued to smile and stare at her fingers in her lap. She sighed. "We spent a lot of time together. I did love him, but, well, we got separated. He just, up and left without a goodbye." Her voice broke at the end of her sentence, and she sucked in a breath to steady it. "Never saw him again."
I wrapped my arm around her shoulders in an effort to comfort her. "I'm sorry." I said softly. "Sorry about fighting with you. You probably mean just as much as I do to him, if not more." She looked up at me when I said that.
"Oh, no. I don't mean that much to him. Not anymore." She shook her head.
"I've seen the way he is with you, Rose." I gave her a doubtful look and she looked back at me pointedly before continuing, "and however fun it is to catch up and be with him again, I'm just not the one he values the most." She gave me a meaningful glance and I smiled through the doubt I felt.
She moved to wipe her eyes and I dropped my arm. "Well, I'm sure he's changed since I saw him last." She turned and smiled at me. "He still stroke bits of the Tardis?" I giggled and nodded, "Yeah, I'm always like, 'You two wanna be alone?" We both doubled over in laughter, slapping our thighs and gasping for breath.
"He really changed into something, didn't he?" She said as soon as we stopped laughing. "What d'you mean?" I peered curiously, not quite understanding what she meant.
"Oh, you know what I mean." She trailed off with a wink. I gasped and slapped her arm playfully, and she burst out laughing. She pointed at me, "It's true though, isn't it?" She grinned, "He's quite, well, how should I say it? He's quite…foxy." I stared, wide-eyed at her, before once again doubling over in laughter
"You are definitely not the first person to say that!" I gasped out through my laughter as I thought back to when Cassandra had first occupied The Doctor's body. She cocked her head at that, a confused expression on her face, but then nodded sagely. "Yes, well, I'm sure you like this regeneration, no? I bet even the regeneration before this." She smiled knowingly, and I stopped laughing.
"What?" I asked.
"Oh, don't give me that." She waved her hand in front of her face as if waving away a rancid odor. "Based on the way we were fighting over him just now, I can figure it out." I stared at her in alarm.
"Don't worry, I won't say a thing." She reassured me. I smiled gratefully. "You should tell him how you feel though. If you do, he'll be fine with it as long as you're fine with him the way he is." I nodded my head, taking in as much as I could.
"But, I must warn you," My heart sunk. "it'll hurt to love him. It'll hurt very, very much." I felt my head drop, and I stared at my fingers now fiddling nervously in my lap. She lifted my chin with her fingers softly, and forced me to look into her eyes. She smiled softly at me, and I opened my mouth to speak.
"So, what do I do? Do I stay with him?" I felt my eyes moisten at the prospect of having to leave the man I love.
She stared at me a second, before nodding her head, and my eyes widened.
"Yes. Some things are worth getting your heart broken for."
