Prologue

A New School

Rukia stood outside her Nii-Sama's study for a moment, steeling herself, before she knocked softly. She heard an emotionless "enter" and opened the door. There sat Kuchiki Byakuya at his desk, as cold and impassive as ever as he looked up at her. "Yes Rukia, what is it?"

She took a deep breath before she answered, "Nii-Sama, I... I wish to go to a different school." he looked up at her then, and said, "is your current academy not sufficient?" she started the speech she had practised often for this moment, "the education is more than sufficient, but, I do not quite fit in at the academy." he raised an eyebrow at her, Rukia bitterly reflected that that was the most emotion he had shown her since adopting her ten years ago. "The Sereitei academy is the most prestigious educational institute in Japan, you are a Kuchiki, how could you possibly not 'Fit in?'" she began to tremble slightly, "indeed I am a Kuchiki, Nii-Sama, but by adoption, as the others at the academy know, and will not allow me to forget."

The man sighed. "fine, I will find you another school." he meant it as the end to the conversation, Rukia was determined it would not be, "please Nii-Sama, I would like to choose my own school." he looked at her questioningly, and she continued, "a public school." his eyes widened and he rose from his seat, "explain yourself!"

She forced herself not to cower beneath his disapproving eyes, "I have researched many towns, and there is one nearby with a low crime rate, good school, and a good economy for such a small town, I would like to move and attend school there." His voice become slightly louder, but it was still not quite a shout as he said "but why would you wish to attend a public school? It is beneath you, as a Kuchiki you deserve the very best education, whether you are adopted or not."

She could feel slight tears at the sides of her eyes, she could not go to another private school, she had attended ten different academies in the last nine years, and each one was the same, elitist arrogant pricks, all snickering behind her back, 'The peasant in noble clothing' they would call her. But the worst… was when it would become physical.

She contained her tears, "Please, Nii-Sama." She was sure he would shout at her now, and he nearly did, but he glanced down at the picture of Hisana on his desk, and knew what she would ask, no beg him to do, he sighed again. "Fine, I shall make the arrangements, what is this town called?" her eyes widened, and she subtly pinched her leg to ensure that this wasn't a dream. Confident this was real and he was serious, she nearly jumped for joy, instead she grinned and said, "Karakura town, Nii-Sama."
