A/N: Just a shortie about Booth's poker chip. I also posted a oneshot called I'll Be Right Beside You if you are interested! Hope you enjoy!
He ran his finger around the jutted curve slowly. His thumb caressed the smooth side over the worn symbol there.
He used to call it his lucky charm. When he walked into Caesar's Palace with 150 bucks and walked out with five grand, he had kept it as a reminder of his winnings. Of course that didn't last long. He managed to keep going for about five months before he completely bottomed out.
But he still kept that lucky poker chip.
It no longer was about his winnings but rather a reminder to stay the course. When he got nervous or agitated, his hand would drift into his pocket and he would reach for the chip, immediately calming himself.
He held it in his hand, packing back and forth the entire nine hours that Rebecca was in labour. And when he laid eyes on his boy, his beautiful boy, it only made him more resolved to shoulder his past and move on.
He flipped the chip between his fingers as he waited for his interview with the FBI. He knew this was the way he could make things right.
He wasn't fiddling with the chip as he waited to meet Dr. Temperance Brennan. After all, she was just a squint right?
Little did he know that his poker chip would get plenty of play around her. He squeezed it when she made him mad. He tossed it when they bickered. And he ran his thumb along the edge when she did something that made his heart constrict.
The chip had met Jasper and Brainy Smurf, both having resided in his pocket for a few hours. The chip had survived shootings and kidnappings. Even an explosion. He hoped that the chip would survive this.
It had been three and a half years since they began their partnership and they kept growing closer and closer. He could honestly say she was his best friend. They bickered and laughed, sharing parts of themselves along the way. The watched movies and ate food and had a good time.
He shifted from foot to foot and squeezed the chip once more, hoping that some of his old luck would come back.
He raised his hand to her apartment door and knocked.
Yes, he need all the luck he could get.
He was going to ask Temperance Brennan on a date.
