A Sudden Sorrow
Remus turned around, just after stunning another masked death eater, to see his best friends fading smile and the lingering green sparks in the air. As Sirius's body fell through the veil, Remus knew he was gone forever. A cloud of despair descended upon him as he realized his only reason for living was gone. He heard Harry screaming, and a sudden fire burst within him because he knew he could not be consumed by grief - not while the order still needed him. He knew he had to fight the pain. Remus ran forward and grabbed Harry around the waste while he continued to scream Sirius' name. In a strangled voice Remus said "he's not coming back harry". Saying it aloud made it more real and he felt his throat constricting. A single tear escaped his eye as Harry wrenched himself free of Lupin's restraining grip. Harry ran off after Bellatrix ignoring everyone's calls for him to come back. Remus sank to the floor beside the arch way. Tonks came up to him with tears in her eyes. "It's all my fault Remus. I'm so sorry." She sobbed. Remus couldn't form words for the way his heart felt. The pain was worse than the cruciatus curse, even worse than when he first found out he was a werewolf. Remus was blinded by the tears pouring down his face now. He decided in that moment that from now on he was fighting the war for Sirius. He felt that revenge was surely the only thing strong enough to fuel him to continue fighting through his earth shattering grief. Tonks sat down next to him and they slouched against each other, letting their tears flow freely. More than one heart was broken that day.
