Fragment 1

Edward Elric was an enigma. He had come to Hogwarts at the beginning of the year with the rest of the students, but as time progressed they realized he was not a first year. He was not in fact, a student at all. He was also not a teacher, as far as Hermione Granger could tell, and she, of all people, would know the teachers.

He would sit in the library for hours on end. He was always quiet, books piled haphazardly around him. A few times Hermione debated talking to him, asking him about whatever subject he was researching, but nerves always got the better of her and she remained silent.

She never saw him at meals. She figured he must take them separately or eat in the library. It was as if he was searching for something but he never found it. He just kept reading and researching occasionally sighing.

It was late one night, as she was finishing up a particularly difficult Potions essay that she saw Edward Elric move. He got up and stretched, completing a complex plyometric routine, muttering the whole time in a mixture of what sounded like German and English. She caught only a few words out of many, but they seemed to indicate he was unhappy with the state of his body. She then felt awkward peering around the corner of a bookshelf and quickly turned away busying herself with rechecking her Potions essay.

She managed to push the incident to the back of her mind for a whole six days before she decided that this mysterious Edward Elric needed to be investigated. She at least wanted to find out what he was researching. She spent enough time in the library, she might as well, especially now that Harry and Ron were off looking for Horcruxes.

It was a fleeting thought for Hermione that they could perhaps be friends. If nothing else, study companions. Without Harry and Ron, she had no one to run her more 'far fetched' theories by, and it was very difficult to keep things in perspective as she had no one to tell her she was wrong.

September drudged along, and Hermione and Edward continued to sit on opposite ends of the library and read in companionable silence.
