Katniss's Bachelorette Party
VERY IMPORTANT A/N: This plot bunny came to me randomly while listening to Taylor Swift, so Madge, Prim, Finnick, the prep teams, Cinna, Portia, Mags, Wiresss, Boggs, and most of District Twelve survive (including Peeta's family and his mother. . . Though she isn't really essential to the plot . . . )
Katniss
I skim my fingers nervously over the top of the kitchen counter.
"Katniss?"
"Yeah?"
"Would you meet me at the lake tonight? At eight?"
"Sure."
I was a flight risk, with a fear of falling
The lake was what we called the lake by the house where my dad taught me to swim. Citizens of District 12 were allowed to go outside the fence now, as long as they carried a tranquilizer.
"And Katniss?"
"Yeah?"
"Could you possibly wear a dress?"
"Don't push it, Bread Boy."
Peeta left then, to 'get ready.' I showered and let Prim brush my hair. After nearly an hour of pleading and begging, she managed to get me to wear a dress with leggings on underneath. I grabbed my leather jacket, bow and arrows, and a hairband. As soon as I was out of the house, I braided my hair again.
I say, can you believe?
The fence had a door now, but I still liked to go under it. It was a little piece of my past. I roamed the forest, tempted many times to kill some animals or gather a berries, but resisted it. I had a feeling that this was going to be important.
As I pushed through the bramble thicket, I stopped short. My breath was taken away.
The moment, I can see it
Yes, yes, I can see it now
The entire lake was surrounded by candles. They lit up the place, reflecting on the glassy surface of the lake with the moon and illuminating the forest. Roses formed a path to the house, where there was a white tablecloth set up over the table. The fireplace was burning, and a romantic dinner was set out. There, standing in his tuxedo, was Peeta, with flowers. As I walked down the path I noticed that they were white roses. No, they were . . . katniss?
He handed me the bouquet. Mixed in with the katniss were primroses and dandelions. Katniss, Primrose, and Dandelion. I had told Peeta about how I often compared him to a dandelion, a symbol of purity and hope.
"A lovely bouquet for a lovely lady," he said, bowing and leading me inside. I gasped. Peeta had cleaned out the entire house, to make it look like what it had been like when my dad was alive.
After dinner, Peeta brought out a basket of bread. "Ladies first."
It actually took me a few minutes when I bit it. A small black box. I opened it up. There was a ring and a note that said 'Katniss is much better than roses.'
I looked up to Peeta, but he wasn't in his chair. He was beside me, on one knee. He held out one hand, as if to ask me to take it, since I had the ring.
"Katniss Everdeen, will you marry me?"
I could only nod and watch as Peeta slipped the ring on my finger. He led me out to the shore of the lake. We sat on the grass, watching the moon and stars and candles on the lake in silence.
Do you remember, we were sitting there by the water?
You put your arm around me for the first time.
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter.
You are the best thing that's ever been mine.
