Fear of being hurt, or ending up dead, those are the basic animal fears. They are instinct, not fear. How far you go to follow your animal instinct may vary, but in the end we all have it for the same reason, we don't want to end up dead. The real fear is emotional. The fear of having emotional pain. This fear occurs when your heart tells you one thing, and your brain says another. In the end, if your heart overpowers the brain, its screams of terror become back round noise, or the brain overpowers the heart, its sad sobs will drift off in the distance. If the brain wins, that sobbing in the distance may never leave you. You may have to live your whole life wondering "what if?" and if the heart wins, and everything works out, the brain calms down, stopping its fearful screaming, but if it doesn't work out, the brain will have to pick up the pieces, and learn to love like the heart once did, because the heart is now broken. It creates a horrible feeling in your stomach, and causes water to run from your eyes. A broken heart can mend, but while it does, if ever, the brain is stuck loving for it, and the brain cannot fully understand the concept of love. It tries its best, but can never really love. It can only create a robotic version of it.

This is what she thought she had. A robotic version of love. But she didn't, not until she rejected him, because of her brain's fear. And now all she could think was "what if?" There was something there. She wanted to follow her heart, but not in the expense of loosing him. But what if she didn't loose him? But it wasn't logical to think that they would always be together. Did she loose him, in a way, by saying no? What would have happened if she had said yes? It would have been great for a while, but then… Was letting her brain win the best choice?

His heart had won, now his brain was picking up the pieces. The physical pain in his stomach was the sign of a broken heart. If he hadn't done what he had done though, there would always be a taunting "what if" in the back of his mind. Hearts can mend, most of the time, but for now all he had was his brain, that without his heart, couldn't function. It overpowered, but still tried to create its own love. But it was a useless love, not one he wanted to use. No one deserved to receive that type of love, when they could be getting the real kind, the kind created by the heart. Is that what she had said no? Because she had this fake love, one that is useless. But she didn't. Her love came from the heart, she just didn't know it. But how could he convince her of that?

The third thing that could have happened was that the heart would win over the brain for her, and she would give in. And they're relationship would grow. They would be happy together. She had been to scared to follow her heart when he had followed his, because she never functioned by her heart, only her brain. They could have been together, they would have been happy, both of them. Neither would have regrets, but the way things turned out, they both had regrets, and it was only a matter of time before they are overwhelmed by those regrets so much that they want to go back. But by then, will it be too late?
