The Lyman Boys

"Dad, what are you doing?"

"I'm scolding these no-good-pain-in-the-ass squirrels. They keep stealing

the birdseed out of the birdfeeders."

"You know they make..."

"Yes, but...," as Noah Lyman replies he starts coughing violently.

After he stops his son says, "Okay Dad, we're going to go back in the

house now."

Josh Lyman and his father start walking towards the house in Connecticut

where Josh grew up. "Josh, I'm fine. The Chemo is doing its job...making me

bald," as Noah replies a lock of hair falls out.

In the house Noah Lyman starts a fire in the fireplace, while fending off

the help of his son. He warms his hands against the warm waves coming off the

burning wood as Josh hands him a glass of water. They both sit, the elder in

a comfortable easy chair and the younger on the couch opposite.

"So how is Senator Hoynes and the Campaign going?"

"Um, Dad..."

"Josh, I told you before and I'll tell you again. You won't get anywhere

with Hoynes because he has no heart. You have to find someone with a heart

and a good brain to go with it. Also good qualities in a wife."

Josh gives him a 'I'm ignoring the last part' look, "Dad, I have."

"A wife?"

"No Dad a candidate."

"Eh?"

"Josiah Bartlett."

"Isn't he that Economics Professor from, what state was it?"

"New Hampshire and he has a Nobel Prize in Economics."

"And he's running for President? Josh, we don't need an Economics

Professor..."

"A Nobel-Prize-Winning-Economics-Professor..."

"as President!"

"Dad, I've heard him speak. He cares about the people. He has a heart

something which you repeatedly tell me Senator Hoynes doesn't have. He's the

Real Thing."

"Are you sure?"

"Sure enough to get Sam to leave his job at, what was the law firm?"

"Gage Whitney. Let me get this straight, you got Sam to leave $15000 a

week at one of the largest law firms in New York, to work for a candidate

that has absolutely no chance of winning. And you're also going to work for

this candidate?"

"The candidate has a name you know. Also Leo McGarry is running his

campaign."

A pause, "Really?"

"Really."

"Josh?"

"Yeah Dad."

"He has a good heart?"

"Yeah."

"And a good mind?"

"Yeah."

"Then I want you to go to this Economics Professor and show him that the

Lyman boys fight for what they believe in and get the job done."

"I will Dad."

The End
