A/N: A short story I wrote for English. Criticism welcome. Characters could be any coupling. Originally it was AU of George and Alanna with George still in the Rogue.

Disclaimer: Any character from Tamora Pierce's books that the readers envision in the story, all belong to Tamora Pierce. I do not claim any for my own.

He walked up to the door with the fog, a dark and dank mist, swirling around him. He reached toward the handle expecting it to be locked. As he pushed the door open, a loud creaking sound could be heard throughout the house, along with the sound of clashing metal.

"Hello is someone here?" he called, hoping against all hope he wasn't alone. In response to his call all he heard was his faint echo ringing in his ears.

After shutting the door, he stepped further into the house.

Upon further observation, he noticed that the fog from outside was even heavier inside, and all along the walls and furniture was dust and cobwebs. It looked like the place had been empty for years.

Swish, clang, whoosh. 'What is that?' he thought 'Must be my imagination.'

There it was again, but this time he heard the faint whisper of a woman. "Get out before it's too late." That was enough for the hair on the back of his neck to become alert.

Not listening to the woman, as if he were deaf, he stepped into what looked like an old library. Stepping into the room, he could smell, old, duty texts and see the tattered curtains hanging on the wall. With a curiosity that burned from reading so much as a child, he gently picked up an old, dusty, nameless tome. He promptly began reading, so immersed in the book was he that he did not notice the feel of a vicious presence out for blood.

The presence drew closer while unsheathing his dagger from his wrist. He was so close to the man he could see the goose bumps and hair standing up on the man's arms and neck, alerting him that he was not alone.

"He's here. Move NOW!" the woman whispered frantically in his mind.

The presence drew nearer and plunged the dagger forward with a swishing sound that resonated throughout the room.
