Author's Note: This is my first fan fiction, so reviews and criticism are very much appreciated.

Disclaimer: I do not own Avatar

As he felt himself growing weaker, he struggled against his rock bindings. Yet, he felt that his body was no longer in control; he was as still as the earth that immobilized him. He felt the fight between the will and spirit of the Avatar against his own. At first, he felt himself winning. Who has as strong of determination as firebenders? As the Phoenix King?

The child might have been reluctant to kill him. But, oh my, what an error the child, the Avatar, has made. Underestimation is a dire mistake one can make in war.

And when he felt himself growing even more weak was when he realized it not the child who made that mistake, it was himself.

He didn't know how it was possible to keep his eyes open through all of this. There was light. Everywhere. Blinding.

It felt like an eternity. In reality, the process was a short few minutes.

Everywhere felt fatigued, even his mind as he saw the edges of his vision darkening.

As soon as he was starting to become more aware of his surroundings, his still-hazy eyes made out a figure.

He formed a fist. Thrust it with all the strength he had left.

He saw no flame. Felt no heat.

Impossible.
