It was all just a distraction from him.
Steve died, and a part of her did too.
Surely it can't get worse than that right?
Well for Peggy carter, it felt like the end of the world so she used a distraction; That's what she called it.
She stayed off work for two days before coming back and demanding the most dangerous missions they could muster.
Though they protested, no one could argue with Peggy Carter when she had her mind set on something.
So that's what she did for 30 years, before her last mission. The deadliest of them all.
Mission for: Peggy Carter
Date: 21 December 1976
Target: Natalia Alianovna Romanoff
Mission: Extract and Eliminate
Reason: Shield radar, over 17 assassinations in 1 week
Location: Russia, exact location - unknown
Additional notes: Target heavily armed with extreme combat training.
She found her wandering the streets looking for her own target.
For the first time since Steve's disappearance she felt mercy, she was just a little girl. Couldn't have been older than 15.
Yet she had been trained into this super assassin against her will.
And they wanted to eliminate her for murders she has been forced to do while she was still a child, still understanding the world around her.
Peggy watched from an alley, she was quick, alert, smart, talented yet her skills were used to do the wrong things.
She couldn't help but stand and stare, it all reminded her of when she was that age; determined and brave.
Though she looked perfectly harmless from a distance, she was going to put up one hell of a fight if someone was going to catch her, which they were if she didn't.
Natasha's eyes met Peggy's, but she didn't run much as Peggy had thought.
"I knew shield would come for me at some point I just didn't expect it to be you." The young assassin spoke.
"You know me?" Peggy asked in confusion.
"Who doesn't? 28 of us in the red room down to just 1. Though Ivan hated it we all took a shine to you, a woman who worked her way up to the top. Who, knew their place in the world." She winced when the last part came out of her mouth.
"And you don't? how they treated you, like slaves. It doesn't have to be your future, come with me." She replied, as she listened to herself she sounded desperate.
Natasha fell silent.
"I'm sorry for this…" she said as she shot Peggy before running off.
Peggy fell to the floor before looking at her chest where a wooden bullet with a note attached to it stuck to her coat.
'He knows, He sees, I have no escape, he broke me too much.'
Peggy took off running only to be caught off guard by Natasha springing on top of her and tackling her to the ground.
"I didn't want to have to kill you…" she spoke softly but fear was in her voice.
Natasha has an arm around her neck and was close to snapping it.
"And you won't, child." Peggy said scam balling for breath, ramming a sedative into her arm, making her fall unconscious instantly.
"You are easily distracted; we are more alike than you think, my dear."
