"Psst… Lieutenant?" Colonel Mustang whispered into the darkness of the hospital room. "Yes, sir?" Riza Hawkeye answered. The colonel sat up in his cot and set his feet down on the cold ground. A shiver went up his spine. "I couldn't lose you, Lieutenant. I had to do it," he said fighting something, his teeth clenched. Riza knew exactly what he was talking about. She remembered it all too clearly- the fat man strangling her, her airways constricted. The panic as she'd run out of bullets. He opened his mouth wide… "Lieutenant?" Roy asked again as he stood up and stumbled in the dark. "Yes, sir? Be careful not to wake Havoc," she rushed to him as he gripped his side in pain. "You shouldn't be trying to stand yet, sir," she argued. He quickly stumbled forward, pushing Riza against the wall. "Your cold hands," he whispered, "They relieve the burn on my side, my scorched skin." "Sir, isn't that against-" Riza started. "Don't argue, Lieutenant. Please, the pain can be unbearable," he played to Riza's soft heart. He knew she had one. She took in Feury's stray dog, after all. Riza sighed as she helped him sit down against the wall. She knelt at his side, and Roy pulled his hospital shirt up around his side. Riza winced as she saw the burn before putting her hands on it. She remembered the burning of her own skin. The colonel had done it. He couldn't finish it, however. It was only partially covered. She knew it took its toll on him, having to do that. She had tried so hard to bite back her screams, but nonetheless, some had escaped. "Thank you, Lieutenant," Roy whispered, his head leaned back against the wall. He sighed in relief. "Sir, I should be the one thanking you. I can't believe that I believed the enemy's word. And to think that I gave up the will to live. Forgive me," Riza answered, looking down, "I just couldn't bear to think of living on without you. To live on without you would be to live a life without purpose. Please, Colonel, forgive me." She bit her lip, tears coming to her eyes. "I must be strong," she whispered to herself. "Lieutenant," Roy started reprovingly, and Riza looked up to see his face as he lectured her. But she was surprised when his face came out of the darkness, and she felt his warm lips on hers. Her eyes opened wider and she immediately pulled back, her hands off his side and on the ground supporting herself as she fell backwards. "Colonel!" she hissed as loud as she dared to without waking Havoc. "Lieutenant!" he gasped just as loud with a fat grin on his face. She stood up, frazzled, stood at her post, and whispered as if nothing had happened, "Sir, you should get to bed. You need your rest." Roy used the wall as support as he stood up. "You need your rest too, you know," he said with a smirk, "Want to come, too?" "No, Colonel, go to sleep," she responded. "Okay," Roy said with a shrug as he climbed back into his cot. "'Night," he said. "Goodnight, sir," Riza replied with a smile, and she hoped the weird pain medications would wear off by morning.
