Sara pounded her locker after slamming the door shut. She was close to screaming in frustration. She'd been working on a rape case for weeks; ensuring there was no way the evidence could be questioned or thrown out of court. After weeks of painstaking work and promising the victim the guy would rot in jail, they court had failed. The judge had called a mistrial on a technicality. Some cop had gone in to the perp's home before they'd been given the warrant. Thanks to them the guy got off free.
"Hey." Sara looked up from her battered locker to see Sofia standing beside her. "I heard about the case. I'm sorry."
Sara practically growled in frustration. "I had the conviction, there was no way the guy could have gotten off. Thanks to one of your friends not waiting an extra forty minutes for a search warrant, I lost it."
Sofia remained calm and placid. Sara hated her for it. She wanted the detective to get angry and argue with her so that Sara could justify hating her and not feel so guilty.
"My 'friend' is paying for his mistake Sara. He has to live with the guilt of being the reason that pervert is running around free, just because he was a little eager to help."
"Help!" Sara shouted, losing her temper at the other woman's calmness and getting right up in her face. "He should feel guilty about what he's done, because some other girl is going to be raped by a man who shouldn't be out on the streets anymore!"
Sara gasped as Sofia lost her cool and shoved her against the locker, pinning her there. "We're going to get this creep, one way or another. I won't stand by and let him hurt anyone else! And I'm going to make sure that he's know I'll be watching him every day until I can bust him for something. He's not getting away."
"Tell that to the victim."
Sofia sighed and nodded, letting go of the CSI but remaining close. "Sometimes Sara, you have to just let go. Keep your work and personal life separate. Go home knowing you did everything you could to help that woman. What happened today was not your fault… and tomorrow's another day." She pressed her lips against the other woman's and smiled at her dazed expression as she headed out of the room.
"I thought you said you have to keep work and your personal life separate." Sara mumbled, running a finger over her lips. Sofia grinned.
"I only said sometimes."
