This is a poem I thought up, that Pippin wrote to Merry in their last
winter together in the Shire. Merry was sick and fear was that he was
fading, but the poem kept him for three months more than they had expected,
which led both him and Pippin back to Rohan for a last visit to Éomer and
then on to their final resting places of Gondor.
~ Just to let you know the word: "yern" is a very, very old English way of saying "fallen leaves" my Grandmother uses it all the time! I hope you enjoy it. Highland-spring.
Merry-Mine
Through my life you've been there, To take away the pain, To show me I was someone, To make me smile again,
You taught me how to love the things, That are ours for free, The nature all around us, The beauty of life we see,
The days of spring and summer, Those games we played of young, The times we shared a tale, In those days that last so long,
Autumns' golden crown brought life, To things that looked forlorn, Never a dull moment, For us in days of yern,
Wintertime came without cause, But still you showed me how, To see the sense in winter chill, Despite the times of ill.
And now our days are drawing, Quickly to a close, Those memories, those moments, Will live as far as we go,
And when time finally parts us, And leaves me standing alone, Those days will be the comfort, And the friendship that I know.
Forever yours, and only mine. Pippin.
