CLOSURE
When I woke the next morning the other side of the bed was empty. I sat up and looked around, and my eyes fell on a note on my pillow.
Gone to see Trey and apologise.
Ryan.
I looked up at the ceiling and prayed silently that Trey would accept Ryan's apology and that Ryan would have closure. I hadn't told Ryan about what happened with Trey because I knew it would hurt him and that was the last thing I wanted to do. His strength amazes me. He's been through so much, with his mum, his brother and his dad, and here he is. When I first met him, the darkness in his eyes scared me and drew me in at the same time. I can't explain it, but I felt an undeniable attraction to him.
By the time I'd showered and eaten it was 10:00am. I decided to find Ryan. I wasn't sure what time Trey was leaving, but I drove to his apartment just in case.
I stopped out the front and looked up. The door was open and Ryan's car was parked a few metres away. I got out and walked up the stairs, hoping I wasn't interrupting anything. When I didn't hear any voices I was confused. I looked inside and stopped.
Ryan was standing in the middle of an empty room. No sign of Trey. Ryan's back was turned and his his head bowed. I stepped forward quietly and stood next to him.
"Hey."
I recognised this look. It was the same look he had when Lindsay left, only worse.
"Hey" He replied lifelessly.
"Are you okay?"
He nodded. I got a strange feeling of deja vu when I wrapped my arm around his shoulders.
"I'm sorry" I whispered. I don't know why I said it. Maybe it was because Trey wouldn't.
I hate to admit it, but since Ryan rarely showed any signs of vulnerability, I'd never really learned what to do when he did. So I did the only thing I knew how to do when he was scared or hurt. I kissed him.
"Come on, let's go to the diner. My shout."
"Okay." We walked out the door and Ryan turned back one last time and closed it. His eyes lingered on the door for a moment. He was reluctant to leave. I slipped my arm around his waist and he looked at me.
"Ready to go?"
He tried to smile, but it was pained. "Yeah."
We walked down the stairs and got into my car in silence. I figured we'd come back and get his later. Ryan sighed, a long and deep sigh, as if he was letting go of something. Of Trey.
We order our usual chili fries and burgers and then left. I asked Ryan where he wanted to go. He turned to me and gave me a small smile.
"I know a guy who has a pool house all to himself."
I laughed. "The pool house, it is."
When we got back to the Cohen's, I made a beeline for the pool house, pulling Ryan along with me. He stopped and I turned around.
"I just have to do something first. But you go ahead" He walked a few metres, then turned back to me, and said "Don't start without me." He was smiling, but his eyes were anxious. Before I had the chance to ask what was wrong, he turned and walked further away. I knew what he was doing. He was calling Trey. I waited for ten minutes, then I decided to look for him. I got up and went to the door, but I opened before I even had a chance to touch the door handle.
"Hey. You going somewhere?"
"I was just about to come looking for you. Are you okay?"
He looked down and took my hands in his. "Not yet. But I will be."
I pulled my hands out of his and cupped his face, bringing it up. "We stick together and everything will be okay. Deal?"
Ryan laughed, and some of the brightness returned to his eyes. "Deal."
